Science in the Summer 2018

The Science of Space July 23-26

Registration for Science in the summer at Tredyffrin Public Library begins Monday, May 17 at noon.

Teen Volunteers Needed!

The Children’s Department is looking for summer volunteers ages 13+ to assist with various tasks, including checking in and sorting items, shelving and straightening the collection, assisting at the Reading Club table, and helping with programs. We will suit the job to your interests, aptitudes, and schedules.

winning books. The 90-Second Newbery Film Festival is an annual video contest in which young filmmakers create weird short movies that tell the entire stories of Newbery-winning books in about a minute and a half. Anyone can enter! In past years we have created films based on Charlotte’s Web by E.B White, 26 Fairmount Avenue by Tomie DePaola and this year we created 90 seconds of Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book. We will keep you posted with the dates and times of the official viewing of our film in New York City at the New York Public Library.

Free tickets will be available in the children’s department 30 minutes prior to each event, except where noted.

Family Storytime 

All year, all thchildrene time Family Storytime never ends! Even when are between program sessions you can still attend Family Storytime on Mondays and Thursdays at 10:30 AM. Just drop in for stories, music and fun. We start handing out FREE tickets 30 minutes before storytime begins. It is the discretion of the storyteller if there will be a second storytime to accommodate more friends. We abide by fire safety room limitations.

 

 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

Join the Worm on books1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Club at Tredyffrin Public Library! Read 1,000 books with your child before he or she enters school–a goal experts say children need to help them learn to read for themselves. One of the best ways to encourage learning is to spend time sharing books every day. Reading together helps develop important pre-reading skills that provide a solid reading foundation—a key to school and learning success. Plus, sharing stories together is fun!   • Wee Play - birth to 15 months

    In the summer, we play at the library with our wee ones! Come on in for some open play and exploration. We’ll have toys and music set up so the little’s can have some fun. Ages 15 months and under with caregiver.

  • Sewing: Back to Basics NEW TIME

    When: Thursday, July 19, 2018 – 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM
    Where: Tredyffrin Public Library at Tyler Hedges Children’s Room

    This sewing workshop will be a little different than past workshops. We will be using sewing machines this class to make a drawstring bag out of bandanas. Any adults with sewing machine experience that would like to volunteer to help this class please email Miss Angie aandre@ccls.org.

    Children ages 8-12 are invited to learn the basics. Online registration required and begins 2 weeks before program date at 10 am. Please note the new time for the summer. We will meet from 4-5 pm.

  • Construction Zone

    When: Saturday, July 21, 2018 – 10:25 AM – 11:25 AM
    Where: Tredyffrin Public Library at Tyler Hedges Children’s Room

    Get creative and build. You will be presented with building challenges and time for free building. Children ages 6-12. children age 5 are welcome if parent stays in room. Tickets will be available starting at 10 am at the Children’s Circulation Desk.

  • Science in the Summer: Science of Sports

    When: Monday, July 23, 2018 – 9:45 AM – 10:45 AM
    Where: Tredyffrin Public Library at Meeting Room

    Online registration begins at noon on Thursday, May 17 at noon at www.scienceinthesummer.com
    This class is for children entering grades 2 and 3 in the fall.
    In 2018, Chester County elementary students have the opportunity to explore the science of space. Students are invited to see the sky above them. Through active, hands-on learning, students explore the sun’s energy, the phases of the moon, human survival in space, and how rockets overcome the Earth’s gravity. From here on Earth, we look up and see the sun and moon, as we dream of space travel and achieve liftoff.

    Please wear sneakers to the class for safety. Arrive 10 minutes early to check-in before class.
    This event is sponsored by Glaxo Smith Kline and administered by the Franklin Institute.

  • Origami Workshop

    When: Monday, July 23, 2018 – 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM
    Where: Tredyffrin Public Library at Tyler Hedges Children’s Room

    Ages 9-12 (FIRM). Learn different origami techniques and projects, guided by an experienced superfan! It is not necessary to attend each week. All supplies provided.

  • Chess Club

    When: Monday, July 23, 2018 – 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM
    Where: Tredyffrin Public Library at Tyler Hedges Children’s Room

    Join us for chess club. Children ages 6-12 can learn and play chess. No registration but space is limited to the first 20 children. Free tickets will be given out starting at 6:30 pm.
