That logo? You’ll be seeing a lot of it . . .

So what exactly is going on?

Your libraries are working toward becoming Gold Star PA Forward Libraries. Developed by the Pennsylvania Library Association, the PA Forward Star Library Program is part of a statewide initiative whose goal is to improve the quality of life in Pennsylvania.  The program enables libraries to create new partnerships; develop broader community support; and develop a powerful, unified voice for libraries as community centers of information, technology and learning that fuel educational and economic opportunity for all.

The program recognizes libraries that incorporate the “five key literacies” -“Basic Literacy”, “Information Literacy”, “Civic and Social Literacy”, “Health Literacy”, and “Financial Literacy” into their programming activities, displays and events. Tredyffrin Public Library has and will continue to pursue efforts to incorporate all five literacies in programming offered for all ages throughout the year. Listed below are the five key literacies with a brief description and library programs that have and continue to contribute to achieving all five literacy goals.

Basic Literacy

Libraries aid Pennsylvania in its goals to achieve one of the highest literacy rates in the country; develop a better trained and more skilled workforce; broaden the tax base, improve the economy, and increase population. In support of Basic Literacy, Tredyffrin Public Library provides story times that prepare young children for school, summer reading programs for children that promote family literacy, and adult reading programs such as book groups and adult summer reading that encourage lifelong learning.

Information Literacy

Libraries help all Pennsylvanians learn how to use online resources and current technology to improve their education, enhance job skills, and participate fully in a digital society. Tredyffrin Public Library provides free 1 on 1 computer training sessions and offers technology assistance facilitated by librarians. The library also provides computers with high speed Internet access and a free Wi-Fi network.

Civic and Social Literacy

Libraries provide resources and services for citizens of all ages that improve the knowledge and skills to enrich their lives, contribute effectively in their communities, and participate in civil discourse. Tredyffrin Public Library supports this literacy by providing programs on local and national history, hosting English as a second language (ESL) classes, and a number of teen programs that focus on civic engagement and giving back to the community.

Health Literacy

Libraries play an important role in helping citizens actively manage their own and their family’s well-being, making them effective partners with their health care providers and reducing costs. Tredyffrin Public Library supports this literacy by offering classes on balance and yoga for adults, programs that encourage activity in children and other health and wellness programs throughout the year.

Financial Literacy

Libraries help citizens become informed consumers and guide individuals, small businesses, and other organizations to contribute to the economic vitality of their communities. Tredyffrin Public Library supports this literacy by partnering with Chester County SCORE to provide programs such as “Understanding Cash Flow” – a program designed to help small business owners and entrepreneurs differentiate between cash flows and earnings, programs on estate management, programs on home selling, as well as other programs throughout the year.
